HANDBOOK DESIGN AND COORDINATION

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Drishti, a leading media and development communication organization based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, conducts extensive trainings on the basics of videography for various grassroots organizations across the country. As learning from their work, a need to have a handbook for the trainees arose. The handbook would consist of all the basic knowledge that they are taught as part of the training, giving the trainees an opportunity to access the knowledge they require to create good quality videos about the work that they do. I was in the capacity of creating a basic design blueprint of the handbook, assisting in the translation of content as well as coordinating with the graphic designer for the final product.

the process

CREATING BASIC STRUCTURE OF THE HANDBOOK

Through several brainstorm sessions with the team of DRISHTI, a basic outline of the handbook was created keeping in mind the following objectives:

  • the handbook should be divided into sections that can assist the readers in understanding the entire process of videography - from research to post-production

  • it should consist of technical chapters, along with sections of guidance that would be in the form of tips

  • the structure should not be monotonous and should consist of various elements to keep the material engaging

CONTENT CREATION AND TRANSLATION SUPPORT

One of the main objectives of the handbook was to provide technical content in an accessible way. Thus, the team at Drishti created the content for every chapter in English, which was then translated to Hindi. In this process, I provided first-level translation support, which was then finalized by Drishti.

CREATING BASIC WIREFRAMES

Before reaching out to the graphic designer, basic wireframes of a set of chapters were created to provide the team with a general idea of what the chapters would look like. This process helped us understand edits that needed to be made in the content, as well as the visual appeal of the handbook.

The wireframes were then provided to the graphic designer, who got a better idea of what the final manual can look like.

COORDINATION WITH DESIGNER FOR FINAL HANDBOOK

Based on the wireframes, coordination processes with the graphic designer began to finalize the handbook. The design coordination was an essential process to ensure that both the client (which is team Drishti) as well the designer is able to be on the same page when it came to the finalization of the design.
